Description
Aulonocara Ethelwynnae: The Chitande Aulonocara
Aulonocara Ethelwynnae, commonly known as the Chitande Aulonocara or Northern Aulonocara, is an exquisite species of cichlid found in the stunning waters of Lake Malawi, particularly in the Chitande Island region. This cichlid is celebrated for its striking appearance and intriguing behavior, making it a sought-after addition to cichlid aquariums.
Key Features:
Origin: Aulonocara Ethelwynnae is native to the Chitande Island area of Lake Malawi. This locale is known for its unique and captivating cichlid species.
Breeding Behavior: Like many Aulonocara species, it practices polygynandrous mating and is a mouth-brooder with maternal care.
Distinctive Appearance:
Aulonocara Ethelwynnae showcases unique characteristics, including black lappets in the dorsal fin of both males and females. Breeding males lack a white-blue submarginal band in the dorsal fin, distinguishing them from other species.
Native Habitat and Distribution:
These cichlids inhabit the sandy regions in intermediate-depth habitats, particularly where rocks are present. Territorial males can be found at depths greater than 15 meters, while non-breeding individuals and foraging females are often found at shallower depths.
Aquaristics:
Maintaining stable water conditions is crucial for the well-being of Aulonocara Ethelwynnae. Keep the pH level between 7.0 and 8.5 and the temperature within the range of 23°C to 28°C. Avoid exposing them to temperatures exceeding 32°C, as this can be detrimental.
In aquariums, it is recommended to keep only one male per species, but multiple females can coexist. Avoid housing them with so-called Chitande Type Aulonocara. Instead, they can be kept with species from other groups, such as sand-dwelling or cave-dwelling cichlids, or even Aulonocara Stuartgranti.
A Cichlid of Scientific Tribute:
This cichlid was named in honor of Dr. Ethelwynn Trewavas, a prominent British ichthyologist known for her extensive work on African cichlids. She is considered a pioneer in Malawi cichlid taxonomy and was one of the first women to be nominated as a scientist by the British Museum of Natural History.
Conservation Status:
Aulonocara Ethelwynnae is evaluated as “Near Threatened” according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (2018). While common at Chitande Island, it is rare at Mdoka, the only other location where they are occasionally encountered.
A Living Work of Art for Your Aquarium:
Aulonocara Ethelwynnae is not just a cichlid; it’s a living masterpiece. Its unique features and captivating behavior make it a standout in the world of aquarium fish. Whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or a newcomer, these cichlids will enchant you with their charm.
Elevate the beauty of your aquarium and experience the allure of Aulonocara Ethelwynnae, known as the Chitande Aulonocara or Northern Aulonocara. These cichlids will transform your aquatic world into a living work of art, leaving all your viewers spellbound.
