Description

The Blue Red Metriaclima species, is a Varient of the Metriaclima Estherae native to the vibrant reefs of Lake Malawi in Africa. Despite their abundance in their natural habitat, they are considered vulnerable due to their limited geographical range.

The term “Mbuna” derives from the Tonga language and translates to “rockfish.” Like all Mbuna species, Zebras are natural foragers, often found scouring large rock reefs for algae and tiny organisms. In aquariums, they thrive in an environment that mirrors their natural habitat, with plenty of rocks to provide security. They establish territories among the crevices and graze on algae when conditions are favorable.

Maintaining suitable water quality is essential for Blue Red Zebra Cichlids. They require high oxygen levels and a high pH level, similar to their native waters in the African Great Lakes. The use of an airstone or strong water circulation is recommended to ensure adequate oxygenation. Commercial water chemistry mixes and the addition of rocks, such as limestone, to buffer and harden the water can help create ideal conditions. It’s crucial to maintain low levels of dissolved pollutants through regular, large water changes to keep these fish healthy and disease-free. While they may consume most plants, hardy species like Java fern, Java moss, and Anubias can coexist successfully, or artificial plants can be used for greenery.

Diet-wise, Blue Red Zebra Cichlids require a significant portion of greens in their meals to prevent Malawi bloat, a potentially fatal condition. Offer them commercial algae wafers, blanched vegetables, or spirulina as their primary diet. Occasional meaty treats like mysis shrimp can be given with caution.

Despite being relatively peaceful among Mbuna species, Blue Red Zebra Cichlids are not suitable for peaceful community aquariums. They display aggression, and larger tanks with other Mbuna species are preferred. They thrive in the company of their kind but can engage in lethal fights with rival males if space is limited. Overstocking tanks is a common practice to disperse aggression.

OB Zebra Cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders. Breeding can occur if conditions are favorable, with males and females reaching maturity at approximately 7.5cm. Successful breeding requires a peaceful tank environment. Females lay eggs in the male’s territory, which she later collects into her mouth for fertilization. After around three weeks, the female releases the fry, which can be fed crushed flake food once they become free-swimming. For those interested in raising a large number of fry, a delicate but manageable process involves stripping the female of her eggs for hatching and rearing in a separate tank.
