Description
The Glass Catfish (Kryptopterus vitreolus) is an enchanting and delicate fish native to the waters of Asia and Borneo. Known for its transparent body that reveals its spinal cord and internal organs, this unique species is a captivating addition to any aquarium.
Physical Characteristics: Glass Catfish grow up to 2.5 inches in length. Their transparent flesh, lack of body pigmentation, and absent dorsal fin set them apart from other species, providing a fascinating view of their internal structure.
Water Conditions: These fish thrive in water with a pH range of 6 to 7 and temperatures between 70°F to 79°F. Due to their sensitivity to fluctuating water parameters, it is crucial to maintain a fully cycled aquarium with low nitrates for their optimal health and well-being.
Behavior and Compatibility: Glass Catfish are peaceful and timid, best kept in schools of at least six to reduce stress. They do well in larger, planted tanks with plenty of hiding spots and should only be housed with other peaceful tank mates to avoid stress-induced color changes and health issues.
Diet: These catfish can be picky eaters, often reluctant to accept flake foods. It’s beneficial to source them from local fish stores that have trained them to eat flakes and freeze-dried foods. For optimal health, supplement their diet with live or frozen brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and daphnia. Placing food near a current can stimulate their feeding response.
Habitat: Glass Catfish prefer densely planted aquariums with plenty of hiding spots among rocks and roots. They thrive in environments that provide shade and diffuse lighting, mimicking their natural habitats in the wild.
Breeding: Breeding Glass Catfish in home aquariums is extremely difficult and rarely documented. Maintaining pristine water conditions and providing a stress-free environment are essential for any potential breeding success.
