Description

The Manda Trewavasae is a distinct variation of the Labeotropheus Trewavasae cichlid, identifiable by its characteristic red stripe. This species, first described by Geoffrey Fryer in 1956, is part of the rich cichlid diversity found in Lake Malawi. The genus name “Labeotropheus” is derived from “Labeo,” a type of African cyprinid it resembles, and “tropheus,” meaning eater, while the species name “trewavasae” is an honorific for Dr. Ethelwynn Trewavas, a prolific scientist known for identifying many African cichlids.

In the wild, the Labeotropheus Trewavasae is primarily found in the rocky habitats of Lake Malawi, where it uses its distinctively shaped downward-facing mouth to scrape algae and small organisms from rocks. This feeding adaptation is a notable aspect of its behavior and ecology. The species displays a high degree of variability in coloration, which can change almost instantly during threat or courting displays in the aquarium. This variability applies to both males and females, with the males typically growing larger than the females.

In terms of aquarium care, the Manda Trewavasae, like other Malawi cichlids, thrives in hard water with temperatures ranging from 76-80°F. They require a diet high in vegetable content, and in the aquarium, they readily accept a variety of prepared foods. The species is robust, but males can be tough on females, especially in smaller aquariums, so ample rockwork or hiding places are recommended.

The introduction of the Manda Trewavasae into the aquarium hobby has provided enthusiasts with access to many attractive morphs, including the popular “Marmalade Cat,” which features blue and orange blotches. Their adaptability to aquarium conditions, combined with their striking appearance and interesting behavior, makes them a favored choice among cichlid hobbyists
