About Yellow Tail Acei Cichlid

Pseudotropheus sp. 'acei' from Msuli Point, Lake Malawi

Overview:
Discover the captivating allure of the Pseudotropheus sp. 'acei', a gem from the azure waters of Lake Malawi. Renowned for its deep violet-purple body contrasted with a strikingly bright yellow tail, this cichlid stands out as the only purple Malawi cichlid. Its uniqueness lies not just in its color but also in its origin, hailing from the serene waters around Msuli Point.

Identification:
The Pseudotropheus sp. 'acei' flaunts a mesmerizing violet-purple hue, shimmering beautifully under the right lighting. The brilliant yellow tail further accentuates its beauty. Its deeply forked tail, apart from being an aesthetic trait, hints at its agility and swift movements in the vast expanse of the lake.

Natural Habitat:
Originating from Msuli Point, this distinctive cichlid can be found in various locations around Lake Malawi. From the picturesque Chemwezi Rocks and the vibrant Chimwalani Reef to the depths of Dwangwa, Luwala Reef, and the shores of Senga Bay, the 'acei' has made its mark. Its favored habitats often include sandy substrates adorned with fallen trees, which serve as both a refuge and a rich feeding ground.

Feeding Habits:
In the wild, the Pseudotropheus sp. 'acei' has a penchant for aufwuchs growing on submerged logs, feasting on a mixture of algae, microorganisms, and minute animals. While it primarily grazes on algae, it won't hesitate to indulge in insect larvae and tiny crustaceans. In an aquarium setting, they're adaptable eaters, which makes them a favorite among hobbyists.

Breeding:
A maternal mouth-brooder, the male 'acei' woos females by crafting pits beneath rocks, displaying its vibrant fins during the courtship dance. After mating, the female holds the fertilized eggs in her mouth, ensuring they remain at a consistent temperature of around 77°F. Within approximately three weeks, she releases the fry, their iconic colors already evident.

Aquarium Care:
For those considering introducing the Pseudotropheus sp. 'acei' to their tank, it's recommended to have at least an 80-gallon aquarium. They prefer moderately hard and alkaline water, with temperatures ranging between 73-79°F. While generally amicable, males can become territorial, especially during breeding periods. However, ensuring a proper tank set-up and group dynamics can alleviate these tendencies, allowing them to coexist peacefully with other larger cichlids.

Special Notes:
The unique fin shape of the Pseudotropheus sp. 'acei' adds to its charm. Its elongated unpaired fins not only add to its beauty but also hint at its ability to navigate the diverse terrains of Lake Malawi. When you bring home this cichlid, you're not just adding a fish to your tank; you're adding a slice of Lake Malawi's vibrant ecosystem.
