The Astronotus ocellatus or Oscar cichlid is a sexually monomorphic South American cichlid that is native to the warmer waters of Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and the Amazon River basin. Oscars are very popular among aquarium owners and can be found in several color strains like the Albino Oscar, Tiger Oscar, Red Oscar and Lemon Oscar. Though they can be territorial and fairly aggressive, Oscar cichlids remain a popular choice because they require very little maintenance and are fairly easy to breed.
