Description

The Emperor Tetra (Nematobrycon palmeri) is a striking and elegant freshwater fish species native to the slow-moving rivers and streams of Colombia. Known for its regal appearance, the Emperor Tetra has a shimmering silver body with hues of blue and green, accented by a prominent dark horizontal stripe running from head to tail. Males typically display a more vibrant coloration, with longer, flowing fins and a distinct, forked tail, giving them an extra touch of elegance. Females are slightly less colorful and have shorter fins but are still beautiful in their own right.

Growing up to 2 inches in length, the Emperor Tetra is a peaceful and active schooling fish, making it an excellent choice for community tanks. It thrives in well-planted aquariums with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 5.0-7.5) and temperatures between 72-82°F. They prefer a dimly lit environment, which mimics their natural habitat, and thrive with driftwood, plants, and dark substrate that highlight their colors.

These tetras are omnivorous and should be fed a varied diet of high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, or bloodworms. When kept in schools of at least six individuals, they become more confident and display their best coloration and behavior.

The Emperor Tetra’s graceful swimming, peaceful temperament, and stunning appearance make it a prized choice for aquarists looking to add beauty and tranquility to their aquarium.
