Description

Unlike its typically reclusive relatives, this crayfish is known for its active nature, often seen scouring the aquarium floor for food. An omnivorous scavenger, it feeds on a variety of meat and plant-based foods. However, it’s not suitable for tanks with ornamental live plants, as it tends to consume them rapidly. Additionally, its climbing prowess necessitates secure tank enclosures to prevent escapes.

As the Neon Red Crayfish matures, it tends to become territorial, potentially showing aggression towards other tank inhabitants. Providing plenty of hiding spots, such as rocks, driftwood, or PVC pipes, is essential, especially when housing multiple crayfish together. A minimum of a 30-gallon well-filtered aquarium is recommended for one adult, with larger tanks needed for multiple adults.

Despite its hardiness, regular water changes are crucial for maintaining its health. It’s advisable to avoid keeping other bottom-dwelling invertebrates and fish with large crayfish. While fast-swimming fish in the mid- to upper levels of the tank can coexist with the Neon Red Crayfish, caution is advised as crayfish are opportunistic and may prey on slower tank mates.
