In their natural habitat, they inhabit shallow waters at depths ranging from two to seven meters, typically in rocky areas within the intermediate habitat of Lake Malawi.
Conservation Status:
Aulonocara sp. ‘lwanda’ is not evaluated by the IUCN Red List, but it faces significant threats due to overfishing by collectors of ornamental fishes. Its distribution is limited, and the total population is estimated to be fewer than 1000 individuals.
Feeding Habits:
These cichlids forage for food on the sandy bottom of caves and sediment on rocks, primarily consuming small insect larvae and crustaceans.
Breeding Behavior:
Males establish territories inside small caves with sandy bottoms. Neighboring males are typically found within a meter of each other. Females gather in small groups on the sand near the territorial males. Spawning occurs on the sand within the male’s cave, without the construction of a specific spawning dish.
Aquaristics:
Maintain a stable pH level between 7.0 and 8.5 in the aquarium, with a temperature range of 23°C to 28°C. Avoid overheating above 32°C, as it can be harmful to these cichlids.
Males can grow to approximately 11 cm, while females remain considerably smaller, with a maximum size ranging from 6 to 7 cm. It’s important to note that Aulonocara sp. ‘lwanda’ is closely related to A. sp. ‘walteri’ and should not be housed together to prevent hybridization.
Provide ample hiding places, especially large caves, to mimic their natural habitat.
