Description

The Albino Electric Yellow Cichlid (Labidochromis caeruleus) is a stunning and rare variation of the popular Electric Yellow Lab Cichlid, known for its vibrant yellow coloration and striking red or pink eyes. This unique cichlid is a must-have for African cichlid tanks, adding both beauty and personality. Unlike standard Electric Yellow Labs, the albino variety features a lighter, more luminous yellow, making it stand out in any aquarium.

The Albino Electric Yellow Cichlid thrives in hard, alkaline water and requires a rocky environment with plenty of caves to mimic its natural habitat. These cichlids are territorial but generally less aggressive than many other African cichlids, making them a great choice for mixed Mbuna tanks. A minimum tank size of 40 gallons is recommended for a small group, though a 55-gallon or larger tank is ideal for a thriving community. They prefer water temperatures between 74 and 82°F, with a pH range of 7.5 to 8.5. A sand or fine gravel substrate works best to replicate their natural environment.

In the wild, Labidochromis caeruleus are omnivores, feeding on small aquatic invertebrates. In captivity, a high-quality diet helps maintain their vibrant coloration. They should be fed a mix of high-quality cichlid pellets, spirulina-based flakes for color enhancement, occasional protein sources like brine shrimp or bloodworms, and blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach.

Compared to other Mbuna cichlids, Albino Electric Yellows are less aggressive, making them one of the more peaceful African cichlids. However, they should still be housed with other African cichlids of similar temperament to avoid bullying. Suitable tankmates include other Electric Yellow Labs, Red Zebras, Acei Cichlids, and Rusty Cichlids.

These cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders, meaning females hold fertilized eggs in their mouths for about three weeks until the fry hatch. Providing plenty of hiding spots will help ensure fry survival if breeding in a community tank.

The Albino Electric Yellow Cichlid is a rare, eye-catching variation of the popular Electric Yellow Lab, offering striking coloration, a peaceful temperament for an Mbuna, and ease of care. It is perfect for African cichlid enthusiasts looking to add something unique to their aquarium.
