Description

The Chalinochromis sp. “Ndobhoi,” also known as the Ndobhoi Cichlid, is a stunning variant of the Chalinochromis brichardi species. Found exclusively in Lake Tanganyika, this cichlid can be observed in two specific localities: Karilani Island and Bulu Point in Tanzania. Renowned for its unique and variable patterning, the Chalinochromis sp. “Ndobhoi” adds a touch of elegance and diversity to any aquarium.

Origin and Habitat

Originating from the rocky and intermediate habitats of Lake Tanganyika, the Chalinochromis sp. “Ndobhoi” thrives at depths of 5 to 15 meters. Its natural environment features a mix of rocks and sandy substrates, providing a rich habitat for this beautiful fish. Max Poll first described the species in 1974, naming it after Pierre Brichard, a Belgian fish collector and discoverer of the species.

Physical Characteristics

The Chalinochromis sp. “Ndobhoi” is easily recognizable by its dun-beige coloration and distinct longitudinal stripes, which persist into adulthood. This species boasts a high body, short head, and a prominent rounded frontal hump. The caudal fin is triangular, adding to its distinctive appearance. One of the largest in its genus, the Chalinochromis sp. “Ndobhoi” can reach up to 16 cm in total length in an aquarium setting.

Behavior and Breeding

The Chalinochromis sp. “Ndobhoi” is known for its prolific breeding habits. Pairs form strong bonds and diligently protect large fry clutches, often exceeding 150 individuals. Males are typically larger than females, a characteristic trait that differentiates them from other species in the Julidochromis-Chalinochromis group. They exhibit specific parental behaviors, with females staying close to the eggs and larvae.

Aquarium Care

The Chalinochromis sp. “Ndobhoi” is an enjoyable species for hobbyists due to its fascinating behavior and unique appearance. While they can reach a large size, they are manageable in most home aquariums. A tank size of 55 to 90 gallons is generally sufficient for a pair or small group. It’s important to provide a mix of rocks and open swimming areas to mimic their natural habitat and ensure they feel secure.

These cichlids can be somewhat territorial, so it’s best to monitor their interactions and provide ample hiding spots. They thrive in a well-maintained tank with stable water conditions. Regular water changes and a good filtration system are essential to keep them healthy and vibrant. Their diet should include a variety of invertebrates and high-quality cichlid pellets to mimic their natural feeding habits.

Conservation Status

The Chalinochromis sp. “Ndobhoi” is classified as “Least Concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Despite its stable population, maintaining proper aquarium conditions and responsible breeding practices are essential to ensure the species’ long-term survival.
