Description

Cyprichromis leptosoma “Utinta”

The Cyprichromis leptosoma “Utinta,” commonly known as the Utinta Cichlid or Sardine Cichlid, is a captivating species native to Lake Tanganyika in Africa. This slender, schooling cichlid is known for its peaceful nature and vibrant coloration, making it a popular choice among aquarists.

Key Features:

Striking Appearance: The Utinta Cichlid showcases a variety of color patterns, often with a shimmering blue body and bright yellow or orange finnage. Males are typically more colorful and may have elongated fins, while females and juveniles are more subdued in coloration.

Social Behavior: These cichlids are schooling fish and thrive in groups. Keeping them in schools of at least 12 individuals helps reduce stress and aggression, promoting their natural social behavior.

Ideal Tank Environment: They prefer a spacious tank with plenty of open swimming space and some rocky areas for hiding. A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended for a community of Cyprichromis leptosoma “Utinta.” Optimal water conditions include a pH of 7.8-9.0 and temperatures between 76-80°F (24-27°C).

Diet and Feeding: In the wild, Utinta Cichlids feed on plankton. In captivity, they do well on a diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia.

Breeding: These cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders. Females carry the fertilized eggs and fry in their mouths for protection until they are ready to be released. Providing a stable environment and proper care can encourage breeding behavior.

Care Level: Intermediate – Requires specific water conditions and a balanced diet to thrive.

Compatibility: Generally peaceful, they can be kept with other Tanganyikan cichlids or similarly tempered fish. Avoid housing them with aggressive or significantly larger species.

The Cyprichromis leptosoma “Utinta” adds a dynamic and visually appealing element to any freshwater aquarium, offering both beauty and engaging social behavior.
