Description

The Chinese High Fin Banded Shark (Myxocyprinus asiaticus) is an eye-catching freshwater species native to the Yangtze River in China. As juveniles, they are marked by bold black bands and a tall dorsal fin, giving them a prehistoric look. However, as they mature, their color fades and their fin height decreases, though they remain impressive fish.

In aquariums, these fish can grow up to 2 feet long and live for 20 to 25 years. Due to their size and space requirements, they are best suited for large tanks or ponds with cool, oxygen-rich water and strong filtration. These peaceful, omnivorous fish coexist well with other non-aggressive tank mates, feeding on a diet of algae, plant matter, and small invertebrates. While they grow slower in captivity than in the wild, they are a long-term commitment ideal for experienced aquarists.
