Description

The Julidochromis regani Kipili, commonly known as the Kipili Regani Cichlid, is a striking rock-dwelling cichlid native to Lake Tanganyika in Africa. Known for its elongated body, bold horizontal striping, and territorial nature, this species is a highly sought-after Tanganyikan cichlid that thrives in rocky habitats with caves and crevices.

Julidochromis regani Kipili requires a minimum tank size of 40 gallons, though a 55+ gallon tank is recommended for multiple pairs or a larger Tanganyikan community. The aquarium should be rock-heavy, with plenty of stacked rocks and caves, as these fish establish territories within rock formations. A fine sand or smooth gravel substrate works best, allowing natural digging behaviors while reducing injury risks.

This species prefers water temperatures between 75-80°F, with a pH range of 7.8-9.0 and hardness levels of 10-20 dGH. Strong filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality, as Tanganyikan cichlids are sensitive to deteriorating conditions.

In the wild, Julidochromis regani Kipili primarily feeds on small crustaceans, insect larvae, and biofilm found on rocks. In captivity, they thrive on a high-quality diet that includes cichlid pellets, frozen or live brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and spirulina-based flakes. A varied diet will help maintain their vibrant coloration and overall health.

This species is territorial and semi-aggressive, particularly when breeding. They do best in pairs and should be kept with other Tanganyikan cichlids of similar size and temperament. Suitable tankmates include:

Other Julidochromis species (if the tank is large enough to support separate territories)
Neolamprologus species
Altolamprologus species
Cyprichromis species (which inhabit the upper water column and won’t interfere with territorial disputes)
Avoid keeping Julidochromis regani Kipili with highly aggressive species or larger predatory cichlids, as they can become targets for harassment.

Breeding this species is relatively easy, as pairs form strong bonds and establish a breeding territory within rock crevices. The female lays eggs inside a cave or hidden area, where the male fertilizes them. Both parents guard the fry, and the young remain near their parents for an extended period, sometimes assisting in caring for subsequent broods. Fry can be fed crushed flakes, baby brine shrimp, and powdered cichlid food.

The Julidochromis regani Kipili is a beautiful and fascinating Tanganyikan cichlid that thrives in a rocky, well-structured aquarium. With its territorial behavior, bold striping, and interesting breeding habits, this species is ideal for experienced aquarists looking to maintain a Lake Tanganyika biotope.
