Description
The Burundi Regani Cichlid (Julidochromis regani) is a captivating fish from the rocky shores of Lake Tanganyika, famous for its beautiful coloration and engaging behavior. This cichlid features a striking pattern of pale yellow or golden hues accented with four distinct black horizontal stripes running across its body, making it one of the most eye-catching species from Lake Tanganyika.
Native to the rocky regions of Lake Tanganyika, the Burundi Regani thrives in environments filled with rocks, caves, and crevices, which mimic its natural habitat. In an aquarium, it requires a rocky aquascape with plenty of hiding spots and territories. A sandy substrate is ideal, as it allows the fish to exhibit natural behaviors, such as digging and exploring. A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended for one or two individuals, but a larger tank is preferable if keeping multiple pairs or a community tank with other Tanganyikan cichlids.
Burundi Reganis prefer stable water conditions with temperatures between 72-77°F, a pH range of 8.0-9.2, and hardness between 8-20 dGH. Good filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality, as this species is sensitive to deteriorating conditions.
Diet-wise, the Burundi Regani is omnivorous, feeding primarily on small invertebrates, biofilm, and crustaceans in the wild. In captivity, they do well with a balanced diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, spirulina flakes, and live or frozen foods like mysis shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. A varied diet is key to maintaining their vibrant coloration and overall health.
As a semi-aggressive species, the Burundi Regani can become territorial, especially during breeding periods. It’s best kept with other peaceful Tanganyikan cichlids, and caution should be exercised when mixing with other Julidochromis species to prevent hybridization. Tankmates should be of similar size and temperament, and the aquarium should offer enough space for each pair to establish and defend its territory.
Breeding the Burundi Regani is relatively simple, as pairs form strong bonds and defend their chosen breeding site. The female lays eggs in a secluded crevice or cave, where the male fertilizes them. Both parents take an active role in guarding the eggs and raising the fry, which remain close to the parents for several weeks. Fry can be fed baby brine shrimp or finely crushed food to ensure healthy growth.
The Burundi Regani Cichlid is a stunning and fascinating addition to a Tanganyikan aquarium. With its vibrant colors, engaging behaviors, and unique territorial nature, it is a species that will thrive in a well-maintained, rock-heavy aquarium.
