Description

The Lepidiolamprologus kendalli (Lepidiolamprologus nkambae), commonly known as the Kendall’s Cichlid or Blue Spotted Compressed Cichlid, is a predatory cichlid native to Lake Tanganyika. Known for its elongated body, striking blue spots, and sharp predatory instincts, this species is both aggressive and territorial, making it best suited for experienced aquarists.

Lepidiolamprologus kendalli (Lepidiolamprologus nkambae) thrives in rocky habitats, where it establishes ambush zones to prey on smaller fish and invertebrates. A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended due to its territorial nature and active swimming behavior. The tank should be set up with plenty of rocks, caves, and crevices to allow the fish to claim territories and feel secure. A fine sand or smooth gravel substrate works best to replicate its natural environment.

This species prefers hard, alkaline water with temperatures between 75-82°F, a pH range of 7.8-9.0, and water hardness between 10-20 dGH. Strong filtration and regular water changes are necessary to maintain excellent water quality, as Lake Tanganyika fish are sensitive to fluctuations.

In the wild, Lepidiolamprologus kendalli (Lepidiolamprologus nkambae) is a voracious predator, feeding on small fish, crustaceans, and insect larvae. In captivity, they should be provided with a high-protein diet consisting of cichlid pellets, frozen or live brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, bloodworms, and small feeder fish. Avoid feeding mammalian meats, as these can cause digestive issues over time.

This species is highly aggressive and best suited for species-only tanks or with other robust Tanganyikan cichlids that can tolerate their temperament. Suitable tankmates include:

Altolamprologus species
Neolamprologus species (larger individuals only)
Other predatory Tanganyikan cichlids of similar size
Avoid keeping smaller fish, as they will likely be seen as food. Similarly, passive or slow-moving fish should not be housed with this species, as they may be harassed or outcompeted for food.

Breeding Lepidiolamprologus kendalli (Lepidiolamprologus nkambae) can be challenging due to their high aggression levels. Pairs should be carefully introduced, and the tank should contain multiple hiding spots and rock caves. The female lays eggs in a protected cave or crevice, and the male fertilizes them externally. The female guards the eggs, while the male defends the broader territory. Fry can be fed crushed flakes, baby brine shrimp, and powdered cichlid food once free-swimming.

The Lepidiolamprologus kendalli (Lepidiolamprologus nkambae) is a striking and powerful predatory cichlid, best suited for experienced aquarists looking for a unique and aggressive Lake Tanganyika species. With its sharp hunting instincts, territorial nature, and beautiful blue markings, this fish is an exciting addition to a properly planned African cichlid tank.
