Description

The Pitch Black Fulu (Yssichromis piceatus) is a rare and striking cichlid species native to Lake Victoria in East Africa. Known for its dark, almost jet-black body coloration, this fish creates a dramatic and eye-catching presence in any aquarium. Males, especially during breeding, develop intense black hues with subtle hints of iridescence, while females remain a bit lighter, typically displaying a dark grayish-brown color.

Growing up to 4-5 inches in length, the Pitch Black Fulu is medium-sized and has a sleek, streamlined body perfect for swift movement. In their natural habitat, these fish are predators, feeding on small invertebrates and zooplankton, which gives them a lively and active disposition. In captivity, they require a diet of high-protein foods, including high-quality pellets, frozen foods like brine shrimp, and occasional live prey to ensure they maintain optimal health and coloration.

This species prefers a tank setup that mimics its natural rocky environment with plenty of hiding places, as well as open areas for swimming. They thrive in water conditions with a pH of 7.2-8.4 and temperatures between 76-82°F. The Pitch Black Fulu is generally peaceful toward other species but can become territorial, especially during breeding times, so tankmates should be chosen carefully.

Their unique coloration and dynamic behavior make the Pitch Black Fulu a prized addition for cichlid enthusiasts and aquarists looking for something bold and different in their tank.
